Display and Design:

The phone is easily pocketable and all the controls are comfortable to use. The Monte measures 108.8 x 53.7 x 12.4mm and weighs in at only 92 grams. All curves and rounded edges, the phone designed to fit in your palm. Apparently the phone is slim and stylish. The phone features 3.0 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen displays with a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels and supports up to 256K colors. Its capacitive technology is very sensitive and responds to even a very light touch.

Samsung Monte

There are three hardware buttons below the display: Call and End keys obviously and the center button. The center button brings up the main menu or toggles between the active app (if there is one) and the main menu. The buttons are not big in size and almost flat at the level of screen, but they’re comfortable enough to use. The mic pinhole is located further down below the keys. On the left side of the phone volume rocker is present while on the right side you will find lock key, shutter key and microSD card slot covered with a plastic lid.

User Interface:

The Samsung S5620 Monte runs TouchWiz 2.0 Plus it’s much like the older TouchWiz interfaces but with many Bada touches to it. The TouchWiz homescreen is widget-based and you can put as many of them as you can fit, but you only get three homescreens and you can’t add more. A strange blunder from the Samsung S5620 Monte is the lack of proper Task management. The phone can still multitask, but switching between apps is impossible. This unfortunately means that you have to go back to the shortcut for the app to switch back to it.

Connectivity:

The phone allows you world wide connectivity with quad band GSM support. It also features 3G support at the 900/2100 bands. There’s 3.6Mbps HSDPA support for faster downloads. The phone also supports Wi-Fi for web connectivity. Bluetooth and microUSB are for local connectivity and data transferring.

Like other Samsung phones the Monte has the new WebKit-based Dolfin web browser. With Flash support and one-finger zooming, it is one of the better web browsers on a feature phone.

Camera:

The Samsung Monte is equipped with a 3 megapixel fixed-focus camera that can take photos with a maximum resolution of 2048×1536 pixels. The camera has a number of nice built-in features like smile shot, preset scenes, viewfinder gridlines, geotagging and panorama mode. The camera offers video recording too, but it can only manage QVGA at 15fps.

Multimedia:

The Monte comes with social integration in the shape of four neat homescreen widgets: MySpace, Facebook, Twitter and Bebo, and MySpace and Facebook get dedicated apps as well.

Samsung Monte TouchScreen

Along with the standard 3.5 mm audio jack and the microSD card slot, the Monte music functionality is harmonized by the great music player usually found on Samsung devices. The music player allows filtering tracks by author, album, and genre. Automatic playlists (recently added, most played etc.) are also generated and can subsequently be used as filters. If that doesn’t seem enough, you can create your own custom playlists. Monte equalizer offers the standard presets like pop, jazz, classic, as well as widening, dynamic and surround effects. The Samsung Monte features an FM radio with RDS. The radio app works with Find Music too, which is great if you missed the name of the song playing on the radio. FM broadcast records are in the MP3 format, 192Kbps 32KHz for High quality (that results in about a megabyte for each recorded minute). You can also pause the recording if you want to skip the commercials or anything else.

The keyboard is bit unsophisticated than a standard keyboard. Its 6.75-inch depth and 1.25-inch height isn’t that extraordinary, but at 21.25 inches wide, the Optimus Maximus is only one quarter of an inch less broad than Logitech’s older G15 gaming keyboard, which is the widest modern keyboard. The device has removable keys, easy to clean and replace. These tightly packed keys make for lots of mistaken presses and also slow down your words per minute.

Optimus Maximus Keyboard

Optimus Maximus requires a few extra steps for installation even as a basic typing device. It requires special drivers and softwares from Art Lebedey, which come with the keyboard or in a small package of 2.7MB that available online and quick to install. Its software allows you customize the image on each tiny display. The default layout provides a standard alphanumeric layout, but through the downloadable configuration software you can change the color, font, and size of the letters. You can alter the background color, you can type words, reassign commands, and even tie image and video files to display on individual keys, or across multiple keys.

As the Optimus Maximus works with both Windows PCs and Macs, it will recognize each operating system automatically and load up the familiar Windows icon and Apple command keys by default, depending on the system. The default settings reside on an included 512MB SD Card, and you’ll find an SD Card slot on the back of the keyboard. This lets you save custom layouts and bring them with you if you move the Optimus Maximus between different computers.

Design and Display:

The all-plastic Samsung S3650 Corby measures 103 x 56.5 x 12 mm and weighs 92 grams. It looks even slimmer than its 12 mm girth because of the distinct diagonal contour. It has 2.8″ screen that displays with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution, just like most previous generation touchscreens by Samsung. Its image quality isn’t as impressive as that on high-end Samsung’s with capacitive displays, but it isn’t too bad either.

Samsung S3650 Corby

Below the screen there are three hardware keys; two receiver keys on each side of the Back button. The Call and End keys are integrated into the body of the phone and have a distinct and audible click when pressed. The S3650 Corby’s right-hand side houses just two controls, the shutter button and the HOLD key, which is used to lock and unlock the touchscreen. The top and bottom parts are absolutely bare.

Connectivity and Web Browser:

The Samsung S3650 has worldwide connectivity with quad-band GSM support. The handset omits 3G support so users are stuck with EDGE as there’s no Wi-Fi on board either. Bluetooth and microUSB port is available for local connectivity and data transferring.

Like the Samsung S8000 Jet this phone also features the new WebKit-based Dolfin web browser, which is a home-brew application. With full Flash support and the new one finger zooming algorithm, it is one of the finest web browsers. In addition to Flash and Java support, the new web browser also offers kinetic scrolling and full screen view. You can scroll by simply sweeping a finger across the screen. The actual scrolling is very choppy and is perhaps the only downside to browsing.

Camera:

The Samsung S3650 Corby features a 2 megapixel fixed focus camera for maximum image resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels. The camera does not have auto-focus, but it supports the nice Smile shot feature. Basically when it’s on, pushing the camera button doesn’t immediately result in taking the picture. Instead, the camera just starts tracking the framed face. As soon as the person smiles, the handset takes the shot for you automatically.

The video recording capabilities of the Samsung S3650 Corby are very poor – it maxes out at QVGA@15fps.

Multimedia:

The music player of the Samsung S3650 is exactly the same as in the Jet and Star and hasn’t been altered much from the M8800 Pixon.

Display and Design:

The Equinox is an attractive device with a slim and sleek profile. When not active, the external screen blends seamlessly into the phone’s external shell. When receiving a call or text message, a semi-circle surrounding the external screen pulses white, and an area in the bottom right glows in one of five colors depending on who is calling, and gives the phone a simple and smooth feel. At 3.7 inches by 2.0 inches by 0.6 inch, the device is a compact and attractive phone.

Sony Ericsson Equinox Review

The 2.2-inch screen is on the top shell, that displays with support for 262,144 colors and a decent resolution (320×240 pixels), while the bottom shell has a concave touchpad, two context-sensitive tabs, the standard green Confirm and red Power/Cancel buttons, a camera tab, a backspace tab, and the keypad. The Equinox is light, about 3.5 ounces, and comes with a USB cord, a wall plug, headphones, and a decent-size, but manageable instruction booklet.

Networking and web Browsing:

The phone is a quad-band GSM and EDGE EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) phone and a dual-band (1700/2100 MHz) HSDPA device, able to hit T-Mobile’s 3G network and domestic and foreign 2G EDGE networks. A basic e-mail client hooks into POP, IMAP, and all the major Web services. The Equinox also includes an IM client for AIM, Yahoo, and MSN, but not Google Talk. The built in WAP browser is fine for displaying mobile pages. The desktop sites took minutes to load.

Camera:

The Equinox equipped with 3.2 megapixel camera lacks auto-focus as well as flash. The camera shoots photos in four sizes and two quality settings. Editing options include three color effects, a night mode, white balance, brightness adjustments, 14 frames, a self-timer, panoramic and multishot modes, and four shutter sounds plus a silent option. The video recorder recorded sharp, well-balanced 480-by-360-pixel videos at 15 frames per second outdoors. . In normal mode, you’re limited only by the available memory, which is a generous 100MB of internal shared space. The Equinox doesn’t come with a memory card in the box, though the slot can accommodate cards up to 16GB. The camcorder offers a few editing applications.

Multimedia:

The music capabilities are straightforward and average. No music software here: Use the included USB cord to plug the phone to your computer and drag and drop your tunes. Compatible with MP3 and AAC files, the music player has the traditional touchpad setup (rewind, play/pause, skip ahead) along with playlists, shuffle, and repeat options. It also holds audiobooks and podcasts.

Sony Ericsson Equinox Blue

All the features of the phone are fine included voice quality, text and multimedia messaging, a speakerphone, a task list, a notepad, a stopwatch, a timer, a notepad, a calendar, a calculator, and an alarm clock. More advanced options include Wi-Fi, USB mass storage, PC syncing, a voice recorder, instant messaging, a file manager, and a code memo for storing sensitive information. With the gesture control you can silence alarms and incoming calls by waving your hand back and forth in front of the camera lens.
